The Man Behind the Universe

Leiji Matsumoto (1938–2023) was born in Kurume, Fukuoka, Japan. Growing up in post-war Japan, he began drawing manga at a young age, eventually becoming one of the defining voices of Japanese science-fiction storytelling.

A Universe of Space Opera

In the 1970s and 80s, Matsumoto helped redefine anime with epic science-fiction sagas such as Space Battleship Yamato, Space Pirate Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999, stories blending adventure, philosophy and cosmic scale.

A Distinctive Visual Language

Matsumoto’s style is instantly recognizable: long elegant silhouettes, windswept capes, melancholic heroines and vast star-filled horizons. His imagery became one of the defining aesthetics of classic anime.

The Craft of Classic Animation

Before digital production, every scene was created by hand. Animation cels and drawings were painted and photographed frame by frame, forming the foundation of the series.

The Poetic of Cosmos

More than space adventures, the works of Leiji Matsumoto explore solitude, freedom and the search for destiny across the stars. His stories often follow characters on long journeys of growth and sacrifice, turning space opera into a poetic reflection on humanity and choice.

Through elegant silhouettes, baroque spacecraft and vast cosmic landscapes, Matsumoto created a visual language where science-fiction becomes romantic, melancholic and timeless.
