Description

Dr. Hell Frontal Portrait A4 – Original Mazinkaiser Production Cel + Matching Douga

An original hand-painted production cel featuring Dr. Hell in a striking, perfectly frontal close-up from Mazinkaiser (マジンカイザー), the seven-part OVA released in 2001–2002. The artwork is accompanied by its matching original A4 douga. Both pieces bear the A4 production marking.

Dr. Hell first appeared in Gō Nagai’s Mazinger Z, one of the defining works of Japanese super-robot fiction. Nearly three decades later, Mazinkaiser revisited the world of Koji Kabuto and the Mazinger machines while retaining the expressive force of Nagai’s character archetypes. Dr. Hell’s sweeping eyebrows, pointed ears and sharply carved features are pushed to an extreme in this unusually direct composition.

Kenji Hayama designed the characters for the OVA, directed by Masahiko Murata and animated by Brain’s Base. Hayama had previously worked on Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still and contributed animation to Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust; his subsequent character-design work includes Tiger & Bunny. Hayama is also credited as an animation director on the series, although the animation director responsible for this particular cut has not been established.

The cel’s design relies on a controlled arrangement of deep blue shadows, pale blue planes, charcoal hair and narrow yellow eyes with red pupils. The matching douga reveals the pencil construction beneath this finished image, including blue and red colour-separation notes and closely spaced hatching around the eyes and forehead. Together, the two sheets document the hand-drawn and hand-painted stages of this late cel-era production.
