Mazinkaiser – Dr. Hell B3 – Original Production Cel + Matching Douga

Dr. Hell B3 – Original Mazinkaiser Production Cel with Matching Douga

An original, hand-painted animation cel of Dr. Hell from Mazinkaiser (マジンカイザー), the seven-part OVA produced by Brain’s Base between 2001 and 2002. This set includes the B3 production cel, its matching original B3 douga and a reproduction background used for presentation. The background is not an original hand-painted production background.

First introduced in Gō Nagai’s Mazinger Z, Dr. Hell returns as the principal antagonist in Mazinkaiser, which revisits the original super-robot mythology through a new animation production. The Mazinkaiser robot itself first appeared in the Super Robot Wars F Final game in 1998, before receiving this dedicated OVA adaptation.

The series was directed by Masahiko Murata, with character design by Kenji Hayama. Hayama’s animation credits also include Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust; he later served as character designer on Tiger & Bunny. Here, Dr. Hell’s silhouette is built from sharply contrasted white and charcoal hair, a severe angular face and intense yellow eyes. The matching douga preserves graphite linework and blue and red colour instructions, documenting the translation from drawing to painted cel.

The B3 notation is visible on both pieces. Dating from the final years of widespread cel animation in Japan, the set is also a useful document of traditional hand-painted production practice at the point of transition to digital techniques.
